Microsoft 265 personal setup

Microsoft 365 for personal use: What you need to know (and why Conquered IT supports Business Accounts only)

At Conquered IT, we specialise in supporting Microsoft 365 Business solutions for small businesses. However, we often get asked by sole traders or individuals using their personal laptops for work what the best Microsoft 365 setup is for them.

While we don’t support Microsoft 365 Personal or Family accounts (these are billed and supported directly by Microsoft), we’re happy to point you in the right direction so you can make an informed choice.

Here’s a quick guide to Microsoft 365 personal use – including setup tips, options, and what’s included for free.

✔️ What is a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family account?

You may already have a free Microsoft account without realising it. If you’ve ever had an email ending in:

  • @outlook.com

  • @hotmail.com or @hotmail.co.uk

  • @live.com

  • @msn.com

…then you already have a Microsoft account!

This type of account can be used to log in to Windows devices, access free web versions of Microsoft Office apps (like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), and use OneDrive for cloud storage.

💻 What Do You Get for Free?

With a free Microsoft account, you can access:

  • Outlook (webmail)

  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint (web-based)

  • OneDrive (5GB cloud storage)

  • Microsoft To Do & Calendar

  • Microsoft Defender Antivirus (built-in with Windows 11)

This setup is often enough for very light personal or home use, or if you only occasionally use Office apps via a web browser or mobile device.

🔄 Upgrade Options: Microsoft 365 Personal vs Family

If you prefer using Office apps installed locally on your device (e.g. Word or Excel without an internet connection), then upgrading might be a better fit.

Here are your two main options:

Plan Price Features
Microsoft 365 Personal £84.99/year 1 user, Office apps on all devices, 1TB OneDrive
Microsoft 365 Family £104.99/year Up to 6 users, Office apps on all devices, 1TB OneDrive each

🧼 Resetting a laptop for personal use

If you’ve been using your laptop for work and want to repurpose it for personal use:

  1. Backup everything you want to keep (files, photos, passwords, bookmarks, apps).

  2. Factory reset your laptop to remove business configurations.

  3. During the reset process (Out of Box Experience, or OOBE), sign in with your personal Microsoft account.

  4. If you’ve purchased Microsoft 365 Personal/Family, your local Office apps and OneDrive will be available once logged in.

This completely removes the device from any previous business setup (including Microsoft 365 Business environments like Intune, Endpoint Manager, etc.).

🛡️ What about Antivirus?

For personal laptops running Windows 11, Windows Security (Microsoft Defender) is more than adequate. It offers real-time protection, firewall, and malware scanning – no third-party antivirus is usually required.

⚠️ A quick note about Conquered IT support

At Conquered IT, we do not support Microsoft 365 Personal or Family accounts. These accounts are supported and invoiced directly by Microsoft, and as a Microsoft Partner, we don’t have access to help manage them.

We specialise in Microsoft 365 Business, helping small businesses set up, secure, and grow with the right cloud tools and expert support.

✅ Summary

If you’re a one-person band or small team using a personal laptop, a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family account might suit you perfectly – especially if you just need access to Office apps and cloud storage.

But if you’re a growing business looking for:

  • Professional-grade email with custom domains

  • Centralised security and device management

  • Collaboration tools like Microsoft Teams

  • Expert support you can call when things go wrong

Then it’s time to talk to us at Conquered IT.
