The summer holidays have come to an end, the out-of-office messages are being switched off and, for many businesses, September brings that familiar “back to business” feeling.
There’s something about September that feels like a reset. Teams are back together, diaries start filling up again, and attention turns towards everything that needs to be achieved before the end of the year.
So, while you’re getting back into the swing of things, there’s one question worth asking:
Is your IT ready for the final stretch of 2026?
Give your IT a quick September health check
IT is one of those things that can easily slip down the priority list when everything appears to be working. But small issues have a habit of becoming much bigger problems at exactly the wrong time.
A quick review now can help make sure your systems are reliable, secure and ready to support your business through a busy few months.
Here are a few good places to start.
1. Are your devices up to date?
Those update notifications are very easy to click “remind me later” on – particularly when you’re busy.
But software and operating system updates aren’t just about new features. They frequently contain important security fixes and improvements that help keep devices running properly.
September is a good opportunity to check that laptops, desktops, mobiles and other business devices are fully updated and performing as they should.
2. When did you last check your backups?
Having a backup and having a backup you know you can rely on aren’t necessarily the same thing.
Your business data is valuable, so check that your backups are running as expected, important files are included and you know how information could be recovered if something went wrong.
It’s much better to discover a backup problem during a routine check than when you urgently need to restore something.
3. Is your team properly protected?
Cyber threats don’t take a summer holiday.
Phishing emails, compromised passwords and fraudulent login attempts remain a risk to businesses of every size. Make sure your team is using strong, unique passwords and that multi-factor authentication (MFA) is enabled wherever possible.
It’s also worth reminding everyone to stop and think before clicking unexpected links, opening attachments or approving an MFA request they didn’t initiate.
A few seconds of caution can make a significant difference.
4. Do you still have accounts nobody needs?
People join businesses, leave businesses and change roles – and user accounts and permissions don’t always keep up.
Take a few minutes to review who currently has access to your systems, software and files. Remove accounts that are no longer required and make sure employees only have access to what they actually need.
It’s a simple piece of IT housekeeping that can help reduce unnecessary security risks.
5. What are the little IT niggles you’ve been ignoring?
The laptop that’s getting slower. The Wi-Fi issue everyone has learnt to work around. The software that keeps crashing. The printer that only works when it feels like it…
You know the ones.
Small IT frustrations can quietly eat into productivity, particularly when they’re affecting several members of your team. Rather than carrying them into another busy quarter, September is a great time to get them sorted.
A little preparation now can prevent bigger headaches later
Your IT should make running your business easier – not become another thing you have to worry about.
Taking a little time at the beginning of September to review your devices, backups, cybersecurity and general IT setup can help you head into the final few months of 2026 feeling much more prepared.
And you don’t have to work through that list alone.
If you’re not sure whether your IT is ready for the months ahead, Conquered IT can help. From day-to-day IT support and cybersecurity to backups, Microsoft 365 and longer-term IT planning, we can help make sure your technology is working properly, securely and reliably.
